The mission of the Auditor General of Alberta is to serve Albertans by conducting comprehensive risk-based audits that provide independent assessments to help the Legislative Assembly hold government accountable. We audit over 175 organizations, ranging from government departments, universities and colleges, to the health authority and financial institutions. Our audits provide our clients, the Members of the Legislative Assembly, with information they can use to effectively oversee and scrutinize public spending. We do this by performing a variety of financial statement and systems audits which lead to recommendations for improvements.

The Edmonton office has an immediate opening for a Principal to join our team.

The Role:

Our Audit Principals lead by example, mentor and develop, have people skills, match resources to risk, are continuous learners, and are engagement leaders.

Reporting to an Assistant Auditor General, you will lead, develop and motivate a number of Audit Managers and professional staff in a variety of audit engagements. Your teams may also include agents/contractors. Your primary responsibilities include developing and executing a portfolio of audit plans and ensuring that resource allocation within your portfolio matches risk. In accordance with professional and Office of the Auditor General standards, you will assess the findings, judgements and professional decisions of the audit teams; and ensure that opinions, solutions and recommendations are supported by the evidence collected.

Strong interpersonal skills assist you to develop effective working relationships with management of audited organizations, increasing the acceptance of recommendations for improved use of public resources. Your strong written and verbal communication skills contribute to the effective and timely delivery of audit opinions and the Annual Report of the Auditor General.

The Requirements:

  • hold a recognized Canadian accounting designation;
  • have a minimum of 4 years post-designation, management experience and financial statement audit experience that includes identifying risks, planning and executing large and/or complex audit engagements;
  • bring proven leadership skills, the ability to mentor and provide career advice to Managers and the knowledge to assist team members in acquiring professional development;
  • have experience managing staff on concurrent projects, excellent organizational and interpersonal skills and the ability to write clearly and concisely;
  • be proficient in the use of desktop computing and related software, as well as the use of computer-assisted audit techniques (experience with ACL preferred); and
  • have the initiative to seek out best practices in business, the desire to remain at the top of the profession through continuous learning and development and the people skills to inspire and motivate other professionals.

Assets:
It would be considered an asset if the candidate has:

  • Exposure to IFRS;
  • Government operations experience at the municipal, provincial or federal level; and
  • Demonstrated proficiency with computer-assisted audit techniques.

Travel is required within Alberta. Final candidates for this position will be required to undergo a security screening.
