Merwan N. Saher, FCAAuditor GeneralProfessional HighlightsMerwan Saher was appointed Auditor General of Alberta for a six-year term beginning April 29, 2010. Merwan’s career as a legislative auditor began with the Office of the Auditor General in 1980. He was promoted to Assistant Auditor General in 1996. Merwan continues to help government managers to wisely use the funds and resources entrusted to them. With the Office, Merwan has overseen the auditing in a variety of ministry portfolios. As the head of Professional Practice, he provided advice on accounting and auditing issues, shared his knowledge as an instructor at Office courses, and improved the Office’s outputs by identifying and introducing better audit methodologies and tools. He has represented the Office in the work of the Canadian Council of Legislative Auditors, and he has served as a member of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA) Public Sector Accounting Board Task Force on Indicators of Financial Condition, and the CICA Study Group on Accounting Bases Used in Canadian Government Budgeting. He is currently a member of the Executive Committee of the Edmonton Chapter of the Institute of Corporate Directors. Merwan grew up and was educated in England. Prior to coming to Canada in 1980 and joining the Office of the Auditor General of Alberta, he worked as an audit professional in the private sector in Britain and Iran. Professional QualificationsMerwan became a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales in 1972 and a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta in 1982. In 2012, Merwan was granted the Fellow of the Chartered Accountants of Alberta (FCA) designation. |
