Who We Are

We are an office of 150 people mandated by the Auditor General Act to examine and report publicly on the Government of Alberta’s management of the public resources entrusted to it. We report directly to the 87 Members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, and through them, we serve the more than four million people who call Alberta home.

What We Do

We are the auditors of the province’s consolidates financial statements, and provincial agencies, boards, commissions, and regulated funds. We audit so that we can report on how well the government is managing its responsibilities and the province’s resources. We provide independent assurance to the people of Alberta that public money is properly accounted.

Role 

If you are a seasoned accounting professional looking to take your career to the next level and you are passionate about improving the performance of and confidence in the public service, then consider being a Senior Staff Auditor with the Office of the Auditor General of Alberta!

Our work will give you the opportunity to apply your education and grow your audit skills in the public sector. Under the guidance of an Audit Manager or Engagement Leader, you will operate in a hybrid role consisting of both financial statement and performance audits, with a greater focus on performance audits.

As a Senior Staff Auditor, you will work independently and in team environments, apply project management skills, and exercise your strong critical thinking skills working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Your technical expertise, coupled with effective communication skills, will lead to your success as you perform moderately complex audits, while building relationships and obtaining knowledge of the auditee’s business and providing coaching and mentorship to CPA students.

As a performance auditor, you will contribute to the planning, execution, and reporting of your assigned audit projects, which focus on auditing the management control systems and processes used by the Government of Alberta to deliver programs and services to Albertans. In addition to performance audits, you will also audit the Government of Alberta’s financial statements, where you will develop your analytical aptitude for computer assisted auditing techniques and gain exposure to data analytics in auditing.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Related university degree
  • Canadian CPA designation
  • Minimum three years of progressive financial statement audit experience applying Canadian Auditing Standards (CAS)
  • Demonstrated abilities in documentation and evaluation of internal control environments and entity processes
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including presentations
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft applications

Assets:

  • Previous audit experience in public accounting, including internal audit
  • Government operations experience at the municipal, provincial, or federal level
  • Familiarity with the Canadian Public Sector Accounting Standards, IFRS, and performance audit standards (CSAE 3001)
  • Previous experience with data analytics
  • Certified Internal Auditor designation

Notes:

  • Final candidates for this position will be asked to undergo a security clearance. 
  • Out-of-town and overnight travel within Alberta is required for this position.
