We are seeking a Senior Financial Analyst who provides specialized technical, analytical and consultative services across a complex organizational governance structure.

Who We Are

We are an office of 150 professionals mandated by the Auditor General Act to examine and report publicly on the Government of Alberta’s management of the public resources entrusted to it. We report directly to the 87 Members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, and through them, we serve the more than four million people who call Alberta home.

What We Do

We are the auditors of the province’s consolidated financial statements, and provincial agencies, boards, commissions, and regulated funds. We audit so that we can report on how well the government is managing its responsibilities and the province’s resources. We provide independent assurance to the people of Alberta that public money is properly accounted.

The Role

Reporting to the Manager of Finance and Accountability, the Senior Financial Analyst implements Finance strategies and initiatives aligned with the overall office’s strategy. The position has a focus on the analytical solution aspects of the finance function. The incumbent will also respond to ad hoc requests from management and employees requiring independent and prompt investigation or research. This position works within established business strategies, policies, procedures, and best practices and is required to exercise judgment to propose resolutions and solve problems independently.

Key Responsibilities

Office Budgets and Forecasts

  • Budget ledger bookkeeping for multi-year fiscal encumbrances and estimates, ensure planned spending are justified through procurement plan, are reasonable use of public resources and stay within budget whenever possible.
  • Document rationale and root causes for variances between forecast to budget and to prior year actual.

Internal Controls Evaluation and Analysis

  • Accounting officer duties for business and payroll expenses
  • Prepare monthly financial stewardship and control effectiveness briefing with follow-up actions or continuous improvement proposals.
  • Provide leadership, guidance and supervision to the Finance Coordinator who is responsible for front-line financial services delivery and basic reporting work.

Analytical Reporting

  • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly and year-end financial statements with supporting note disclosures, reports and analytical working papers.
  • Prepare and analyze cost efficiency performance measure results report with data verification, reconciliation, and identification of issues to ensure the information is reliable, compliant with the methodology specifications, agrees with underlying source data, and applied consistently for the current and comparative prior years.

Qualifications

  • University Degree in a related discipline;
  • Professional accounting designation (CPA);
  • Minimum 4 years related experience;
  • Work experience with an accounting firm would be an asset;
  • Ability to work independently meeting deadlines with minimum supervision;
  • Exceptional analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Ability to communicate complex information using simple and plain language utilizing superior verbal, written, and presentation skills;
  • Proficiency with computer-based processes/applications related to Finance, Accounting, or HR (e.g. ERP, SAP/1GX, Excel) would be an asset;
  • Related government experience or knowledge of government structure is an asset.

This is an 18-month full-time position based in Edmonton working 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Possibility to transition into a permanent role within the office exists at the end of the term.
