Biography
Phillip (Phil) D. Peters became Alberta’s 12th Auditor General on April 29, 2026.
Phil brings more than two decades of senior professional experience spanning financial and tax law, legislative oversight, and both private and public-sector auditing. His career reflects a deep commitment to integrity, ethical leadership, and strengthening governance in the public interest.
He began his professional career with a global accounting firm, where he qualified as a designated accountant. He later joined the federal public service as an auditor before pursuing legal studies at the University of Alberta. After earning his law degree, he articled at a large private sector firm and went on to practice in tax and financial law with Alberta Justice, later earning a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from Osgoode Hall Law School.
In 2017, Phil joined Alberta’s Office of the Auditor General as a Legislative Audit Advisor. Over the past nine years, he has played a lead role in advising audit teams and senior leadership on complex legislative, governance, and accountability matters. During this time, he also served as the Office’s General Counsel and Ethics Officer, helping to strengthen ethical practice, legal compliance, and professional standards across the organization.
Phil has contributed to submissions made to accounting standard setters and has served on a professional disciplinary tribunal. In recognition of his distinguished service and professional standing, he was appointed King’s Counsel in 2022 and was named a Fellow of the Chartered Professional Accountants in 2026.
Raised on a small cattle ranch and active in 4-H during his youth, Phil brings a grounded, community-oriented perspective to his work. He has remained deeply engaged in the community, including long-standing involvement with the BGC Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton, leadership of United Way workplace campaigns, and frequent public speaking.
